Not only is your Vatican experience including the special visit in the Sistine Chapel but a visit of the Vatican restricted areas closed to the public too. They are the Niccoline Chapel, Cabinet of the Masks and Bramante staircase.
The Bramante Staircase was built in the 1500s by the first architect of St. Peter Basilica and commissioned by the Pope Julius the II. The staircase is a double helix that allows people to go up and down without meeting each other. The Pope used to go up the marble staircase on his horse too.
Another areas that belongs to the restricted areas is Cabinet of the Masks. Beautiful ancient mosaics from the Villa of Hadrians’ Emperor covers its floors, some of them representing beautiful masks.
Then, you will proceed towards the common galleries and through the Raphael Rooms, reaching another amazing off limit place known as the Nicholas V Chapel. Fra Angelico painted its walls, representing the Christian Martyrs and St. Lawrence’s and St. Stephen’s life.
The Chapel was painted between the 1447 and 1450 and Fra Angelico used also a large quantity of Gold. Entering this area, the elegance style of the artist and the story of St. Stephen and St. Laurence will surround you. The Chapel was the place where the Pope used to pray.
Palafrenieri Room and the Raphael’s Loggia surrounds it. The Chapel is in the heart of the Apostolic Palace of Pope Innocent III.
You will enter the Sistine Chapel when Vatican Museums are closing. It will be just for you and the other participants of your group (up to 15 people or less). You will admire the impressive and breath-taking Michelangelo Frescoes of the Creation of the World and the Last Judgement.
Michelangelo worked twice at Sistine Chapel, accomplishing the two Popes’ requests in a very short time, making this a masterpiece famous all over the world. He realized the worldwide known ceiling in only 4 years for Julius II. Instead Last Judgement, had been completed in 5 years, when he was 61 years old.
It will be a once in a life experience to be inside the Sistine chapel. Its beauty and Michelangelo skills will touch you and amaze you. You will spend about 30 minutes here, enjoying this special moment almost alone!
The itinerary covers the off- limits areas, the beautiful Vatican Galleries such as Gallery of Tapestry, Gallery of Candelabra and Gallery of Maps too. Gallery of Maps is a stop not to miss for everyone who is fond of geography. Here you will find geographic maps representing Italy from North to South.
