Pompeii is an archaeological site located near Naples in the south of Italy. In 62 A.D., the city of Pompeii suffered from a serious earthquake which was followed by the tragic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
At the end of the XVIII century, thanks to the support of Charles III of Bourbon, some excavation work started to bring to light this ancient site. At first, some Roman coins and daily life objects were found, then archaeologists found an epigraph with written Res Publica Pompeianorum that was key to understand that Pompeii was a whole city yet to discover. Later on, some shrines and theatres were brought to light together with private houses and graveyards, all precious discoveries that helped portraying the Roman civilisation.
In 1997, Pompeii became a UNESCO world heritage site and today it keeps on attracting tourists from all over the globe.
