Located a few metres away from St. Mark Square, the Bridge of Sights is made of white limestone and windows made with stone bars. Nowadays it is called also “Bridge of Lovers” but its origins are much more creepy.
The Bridge of Sights was designed and and built at the beginning of XVII century by Contino, who was in the same family of the architect who projected Rialto Bridge. In the past, the Bridge had the main function of connecting Doge’s Palace with Prisons. In fact, it is said to be called this way due to the fact that prisoners used to have their last sights before their imprisonment just walking on this Bridge.
