Gianicolo hill

The name of Janiculum hill, one of the roman higher location, derives from the god Janus, who probably was venerated on the spot and according to some local traditions found a village over the hill. As it is not located in downtown, this hill is not present in the list of the seven hills of Rome but it is still a perfect spot to have an overview of the city. During the Nineteenth century, the french troops attacked and bombarded Rome on the hill. To commemorate the heroic gestures of italian people that fought to protect the city, on the Janiculum it is possible to see some busts. It has become in fact a public garden and there still a curious tradition: every day, at midday from the hill a gun is fired. Previously, this act was realized from Sant’Angelo Castle.

Among the nearest locations worthy of note, Villa Doria Pamphili, one of the biggest green areas of the city, the botanical garden and Trastevere, a typical neighborhood where having a dish of pasta or a pizza.
