Campo De’ Fiori is one of the most famous squares in the heart of Rome, located near Piazza Navona. The name of the square means “field of flowers” and it recalls that back in the Middle Ages in this place there was a meadow. All over the years, a few important buildings were built around the square such as the Renaissance Palazzo della Cancelleria. This area hosted a prosperous horse market, but was also used for public execution. In the centre of the square the famous statue dedicated to philosopher Giordano Bruno who was burnt alive in 1600 in the square because he had been accused of heresy.
Campo De’ Fiori hosts one of the oldest markets in Rome; ever since 1869, this square has welcomed a daily market, at first offering only vegetables and then also fish and meat.
However, like in the 19th century, one can still feel the thrilling atmosphere that characterises this market today.
