Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is one of the major squares in Florence and is particularly known for its L-shape. This marvellous square represents a symbol of the Florentine Republic as it has always been associated to its politics and it has always represented the main meeting point both for tourists and Florentines, a few minutes walking from Palazzo Vecchio, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Uffizi Gallery.

The main feature of this square is the number of statues that populate Piazza della Signoria which tell the story of Florence. The Marzocco and the Judith by Donatello represent respectively the city and the political independence of the Florentine Republic. Another example that expresses the clash between the Republic and the ruling house De Medici is Michelangelo’s David. In front of Palazzo Vecchio there is also the Fountain of Neptune which was the first public fountain in Florence and was completed in 1565.
