Niccoline Chapel

Just behind Raphael’s Rooms you can discover this coffer named by Pope Nicholas V as a private chapel. The frescos decoration was assigned to the Italian painter Beato Angelico in 1448 and consists of two overlapping register along the four sides.

According with correspondence law, we find episodes from the life of Sts. Steven and Laurence; the frescos start with their diaconal consecration, their witness of faith and their martyrdom at the end. The ceiling is divided into four sections and contains portraits of the Four Evangelists; framed in niches on the walls the eights Doctors of the Church. The style is typical renaissance with human and heroic figures that transmit a sense of history and holiness.
