Tapestry gallery is one of the most famous galleries among Vatican Museums. It was set up in 1838 with tapestries by the so called “New School”, named this way to outline its peculiarities from the Old School.
Tapestries were exhibited first in Vatican Painting gallery and created while Leone X was Pope, so in the early 16th century, in Bruxelles. Tapestries made by the New School, were created based on drawings by Raphael scholars. They were exhibited at the beginning in the Sistine Chapel.
The itinerary covers 2 series of tapestries, dating back between 16th and 17th century. One of the most relevant is the one about histories showing episodes from Christ life, located on the left side of the galler, walking towards the Sistine Chapel.
On the other side of the gallery, it is possible to admire tapestries about episodes of Pope Urban VIII life.
