The Colosseum, also known as “Flavian Amphitheater”, was built with the purpose of housing the Gladiators games to entertain the Emperors and the public who were spent the whole day inside the Colosseum. Games were divided in “Venationes” where the Bestiarii, Gladiators, were fighting to death against beasts imported from the empire. In the afternoon, there were the “Munera” games where gladiators were fighting against other gladiators. The Colosseum also had the dungeons area that is today perfectly visible from the Arena Floor. The dungeons were tunnels to store the animals during the show; animals were kept in those huge cages that were lifted up to the arena stage, through trap doors.
Today, you will enter the Colosseum through the Gladiator’s Gate, also known as the Gate of the Deaths or the “Libitina” Gate. From here, slaves carried the death bodies of the gladiators out of the Colosseum. The slaves were often wearing a mask recalling Charon the ferryman of Hades.
