Designed principally by Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Bernini, St. Peter’s is undoubtedly one of the finest expression of Art during Renaissance and the largest church in the world.

St. Peter’s is the burial site of the Saint who bears the same name: this is just one of the countless reasons why it is a pilgrimage destination and it still holds liturgical functions. The Pope presides at a number of liturgies throughout the year both in the basilica and in the Square. Discover the history and the details of the construction of St. Peter’s  which began on 18 April 1506 and was completed in 1626.

Admire the magnificence of one of Michelangelo’s best works: Pietà sculpture. This stunning marble sculpture depicts the body of Jesus a few moments after the crucifixion. He is represented on the lap of this Mother Mary.

Continue your tour and stop at St. Peter’s Baldachin. This is a large bronze sculpture by Bernini. You will see the Baldachin right in front of the altar, at center of the crossing, below the Dome. Its main function was to remember the place where St. Peter was buried, in fact this monumental art piece is located over St. Peter’s tomb.

Lastly, take the chance to explore St. Peter’s Dome and marvel at the unique view from above.
