Colonna Square

In italian, the word colonna means ‘column’ and this is what gives the name to this symbolic square in Rome. In fact, at the centre Marcus Aurelius column rises since centuries, describing scenes regarding his life and the wars he fought. It is surrounded by important buildings, as Palazzo Wedekind, that holds the headquarter of one of the most famous italian newspapers called Il Tempo. Before, on the site there was the temple of Marcus Aurelius; now the building shows some etruscan ionic columns. The little church of Saint Bartholomew and Alexander of Bergamo takes up the other side of the square, right in the middle of two buildings. Near the shopping street of via del Corso the tourist can also admire a small fountain made in white marmol and furnished by the Virgo Aqueduct, the one used by Trevi Fountain too. Some groups of sculpted dolphin arise from the water, while in the rim it is possible to observe decorative lion heads. From this point of the square, enjoy the view of the big Altare della Patria in Venice square or, to opposite side, the obelisk in the midst of the twin churches in Popolo square.
