A Day in Rome on a Budget: The Best Food You Can Get for 15 Euros

For many people that come to Rome, it can be a really expensive trip. Coming from countries outside of Europe, could represent spending 500 euros or more on flights back and forth, and this is per person. Then you have to sum up visiting monuments, hotels and additional experiences.

This is why, today we bring you a full guide on how to save money on your trip, this time, how to eat in Rome for 15 euros!

Breakfast

So let’s begin, first thing first. The breakfast and this time Italian style.

If you didn’t know, Italians don’t eat breakfast like most people around the world. They don’t have the typical bread and eggs, toasts and sausages, bowl of cereal or any of these American style foods.

For Italians, breakfast is three things: Sweet, fast and small. The typical way to eat here is to wake up, grab a coffee at home if you want, and then right before starting to work, stop at your local bar (cafeteria), and order a cornetto (croissant) and any type of coffee, it could be espresso, long coffee or cappuccino. The pastry could change also, for a mini donut or a classic cannoli.

Sweet pastry: 1.5 EUR
Coffee: 1 – 1.5 EUR

Breakfast: 3 EUR

Recommended place: “Caffe dei Papi” – right next to our Vatican office. Via Vespasiano 28.

Lunch

Now after a long walk and sightseeing in the center of Rome, it is time for lunch.

This is one of the most important and ceremonial times for Italians, traditionally people can stop working for almost 2 hours in order to have enough time to properly enjoy their food.

For lunch you can go to a pizza place, and order like a true Italian, the “Pizza al Taglio”, which is to order the flavors you want of pizza in the exact amount you want, then you just pay the value of each flavor based on its weight.

Pizza: 5 EUR

Gelato

Now before dinner, of course it is necessary to make another stop to try some Italian “Gelato”.

For this option we want to give you two ways to do it. On average the price of a good quality Gelato goes from 2 to 3 euros, avoid buying it near monuments because Gelato can go up to 7 euros!

1st option – Go to San Calisto bar in Trastevere. Here for 3 euros you can have a good beer and a simple vanilla ice cream.

2nd option – Go to “Gelateria La Romana”. A great place to grab a good gelato and take a seat to rest and charge your phone.

Gelato: 2 EUR average.

Dinner

Now to finish the day, we got 5 more euros to spend, the exact amount to enjoy one of Rome’s most trendy spots, “Trapizzino”.

The famous fried pizza pocket. A delicious dish in the city, you can choose from their 5 flavors, we recommend the “Pollo alla cacciatora” and “Polpetta al Sugo”.

Trapizzino: 5 EUR

There you go, 15 euros per person.

With this recommendation you can save money to enjoy the experiences inside the city. We understand that the Eurotrip is a dream but what better to enjoy even more saving up money like a local.

Peposo is an ancient meat stew slowly cooked with plenty of black pepper and red wine. Originating from the Impruneta area, this dish is a true comfort food for chilly winter evenings.
Where to find it: Many traditional restaurants in Florence serve this specialty, often accompanied by creamy polenta.

Castagnaccio: Sweet and Rustic

For those with a sweet tooth, castagnaccio is a must-try. This cake made from chestnut flour, enriched with pine nuts, raisins, and rosemary, is a typical dessert of the winter season.
Fun fact: Naturally gluten-free, this dessert was originally considered a poor man’s food but is now a delicacy appreciated by everyone.

Noble Wine and Vin Santo: The Winter Goblets

Jubilee in Rome: The History and Opening of the Holy Doors

Rome, a metropolis that has captivated pilgrims and visitors for centuries with its rich history and religious traditions, becomes the center of an extraordinary spiritual celebration during the Jubilee. This event, deeply rooted in the Middle Ages, attracts millions of faithful from all corners of the world.

But what exactly is the Jubilee? And what is the significance of the opening of the Holy Doors? In this article, we’ll explore the history and importance of this celebration, taking you on an exciting journey through centuries and the symbolic landmarks of Rome. If you’re planning to visit the Italian capital during a Jubilee, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an immersive and unique experience.

The History of the Jubilee

The first Jubilee was proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Initially, this celebration was held every hundred years, granting pilgrims a plenary indulgence, or the total remission of sins. Later, the interval between Jubilees was reduced to fifty years, and in 1470, Pope Paul II established it as an event occurring every twenty-five years, with additional extraordinary Jubilees announced for special occasions.

Ordinary Jubilees follow a precise ritual, including the opening of the Holy Doors in Rome’s four Papal Basilicas: St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. These doors, symbols of spiritual passage and renewal, remain open throughout the Jubilee year.

The Opening of the Holy Doors: A Symbol of Grace and Renewal

The opening of the Holy Doors is one of the most profound moments of the Jubilee. This solemn rite represents the Church’s invitation to all faithful to embark on a path of conversion and reconciliation. Each door is sealed at the end of a Jubilee and reopened only for the next one, a gesture filled with symbolic meaning that highlights the extraordinary nature of this event.

Among the four Holy Doors, the one at St. Peter’s Basilica is undoubtedly the most iconic. The opening takes place during a solemn ceremony presided over by the Pope, drawing thousands of faithful to the Eternal City. Walking through a Holy Door is not just a physical act but a spiritual gesture symbolizing the desire to draw closer to God and receive His mercy.

Visiting Rome During the Jubilee

Book a guided tour to explore the allure of this enigmatic faith.

Recently restored, the pyramid offers a glimpse into a time when Egypt strongly influenced Roman art and culture.

The Magic Door of Piazza Vittorio

A true enigma of Ancient Rome, the Magic Door is an intriguing monument located in the gardens of Piazza Vittorio. The Roman Houses of the Celio Hill

Hidden in the heart of Rome, beneath the Basilica of Saints John and Paul on Celio Hill, lies an extraordinary complex of ancient Roman houses. The well-preserved frescoes depict domestic scenes and religious themes, while the structures themselves tell the story of their transformation into early Christian worship sites.

The Appian Way Park

Although the Appian Way is famous, its park is often overlooked. Here, you can walk among ancient ruins, mausoleums, catacombs, and aqueducts surrounded by lush greenery. The Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and the Villa of the Quintilii are must-see stops. Cycling along this “Regina Viarum” is a magical experience that transports you out of time.
