Casa Buonarroti: a monument to Michelangelo’s life and art
The building that the Museum is in today is a collection of the buildings that Michelangelo bought, lived in and rented during his time in Rome and Florence. Michelangelo had, in fact, come to Rome in 1508 to work on the Tomb of Pope Julius II and, during that time, he became the owner of four buildings located via Buonarroti. He later bought a fifth building and he lived in the two most spacious ones throughout his years in Florence, when he was working on the façade of the Basilica San Lorenzo.
The building then became property of Michelangelo’s nephew, after his death in 1590. He turned the buildings into a monument in honor of his uncle. The inside of the building was decorated by artists like Artemisia Gentileschi, Francesco Furini, Giovanni da San Giovanni, Ottavio Vannini, Jacopo Vignali, and more.
