Find out something more about the MAXXI Museums and why you should visit them during a visit of Rome!
The history of MAXXI Museum
The MAXXI Museum is quite modern. It was built in 2009, after the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage did a competition for the best design for a contemporary art Museum in 1998. The contest was won by Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi/British architect and designer. The MAXXI Museum was built in the same place where Caserma Montello, a military campus, used to be. It only opened in 2010, after 10 long years of construction!
MAXXI Museum: where modern art meets cutting-edge architecture
The MAXXI Museum is the first Italian Museum that focuses on modern and contemporary art rather than focusing on ancient works. Its name is the anagram of “Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI secolo” (the XXI century art National Museum). It’s property of the Italian Ministry for Culture but it’s managed by a private foundation that takes care of hosting the best exhibitions, creating an interactive space for the visitors of the Museum, and holding many conferences and events that keep people interested. The Museum also has an extension, called the MAXXI Architettura, which focuses on modern architecture.
